RICHMOND - George Washington women's basketball senior guard Brianna Cummings was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Defensive Team and the Colonials were picked to finish sixth in the annual Preseason Poll, both released on Monday morning at the conference's Media Day.

Cummings enters her senior season as one of GW's most experienced players. She has played in 92 games over her first three seasons with starts in 34 contests. Last season she set career-high totals in both blocks (18) and steals (26) while averaging 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

The Lawrenceville, Georgia, native is one of six returning players from last season's team that secured the 21st 20-win season in program history and the team's third consecutive Atlantic 10 regular-season championship. The Colonials welcome six newcomers to the team for the 2017-18 season with three freshmen and a trio of transfers.

GW garnered 116 points to finish sixth in the Preseason Poll behind reigning tournament champion Dayton (182 points), Saint Louis (174), Saint Joseph's (170), Duquesne (160) and Fordham (150). The Colonials were slotted ahead of La Salle (114), George Mason (79), Richmond (78), Massachusetts (73), VCU (56), St. Bonaventure (50), Rhode Island (46) and Davidson (22).

The Colonials will face 12 postseason teams from last year during the upcoming season, including four games against opponents that participated in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

GW will open the 2017-18 season on Friday, November 10 with a visit to Princeton. The Colonials downed the Tigers, 56-45, in the 2016-17 home opener for the first win of the Jennifer Rizzotti era.
