GW Basketball Talks Hoops with Area Reporters at Media Day on Thursday
Coaches Lonergan and Tsipis, Men's Basketball Players Share Thoughts on Upcoming 2012-13 Seasons
Nov. 8, 2012
In front of a media contingent that included over two dozen media members representing more than 15 outlets, the George Washington men's and women's basketball teams hosted Media Day on Thursday ahead of this weekend's season openers at the Charles E. Smith Center.
The women's squad, led by first-year head coach Jonathan Tsipis, begins the 2012-13 campaign on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. versus UT Arlington. Today, looking ahead to his head coaching debut, Coach Tsipis noted the value of having three graduate students in Tara Booker, Sara Mostafa and Brooke Wilson to lean on. Coach Tsipis' full remarks can be viewed on RaiseHigh.tv here.
Men's head coach Mike Lonergan also spoke of coaching a "new" team today. Unlike Coach Tsipis, who literally coached at a different program last season when his Notre Dame Fighting Irish advanced to their second straight NCAA Championship game, Coach Lonergan's "new" team comes in the form of six fresh faces from a season ago - his first in Foggy Bottom. Villanova transfer Isaiah Armwood, who will serve as a team captain along with sophomore John Kopriva as voted by his teammates this year, joins a heralded recruiting class of five freshmen whom Coach Lonergan will rely heavily upon in 2012-13.
First Team Washington Post All-Met guards Joe McDonald (Landon) and Kethan Savage (Episcopal), along with Kevin Larsen (Montrose Christian), Patricio Garino and Paris Maragkos, comprise the Colonials' freshman quintet that Coach Lonergan and his staff worked tirelessly to recruit to GW last season. Coach Lonergan's remarks can be viewed on RaiseHigh.tv here.
The six newcomers will help the Colonials vie for a spot in the 12-team A-10 Championship this season, which will be played for the first time at the brand new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., from March 14-17.
While the men's team debuts on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. against Youngstown State, Thursday's order of business was acquainting the new - and new-look - Colonials with DC's media ahead of the highly anticipated basketball seasons set to tip off in Foggy Bottom.
