The GW-UT match-up is the fourth to take place at Foggy Bottom's Smith Center, with the three previous meetings drawing a total of 12,786 fans, or better than 4,200 per contest. GW's initial home meeting with #2 Tennessee on Nov. 27, 2001, drew a Smith Center record crowd of 5,252. Two years later in Dec. 2003, the Colonials and Lady Vols played before 4,327 fans, the second-largest women's basketball crowd in program history. In Dec. 2005, another 3,207 came out for UT's third visit to Smith Center. Tennessee has won all eight meetings in the series.
GW (4-2) owns the nation's ninth longest home court winning streak with 17 consecutive victories on the Smith Center hardwood. The Colonials, who had a 15-game home streak snapped by nationally ranked Rutgers last season, have won 32 of their last 33 games in Foggy Bottom, nearly 90 percent (132-of-147) of their home games over the past decade and 77.7 percent (341-98) in the facility's 33 seasons.
Behind Tournament MVP Jessica Adair's 17.0 ppg and 15-of-20 shooting, GW captured the title of its own Thanksgiving Classic with victories over South Alabama (64-59) and Hartford (67-65) Nov. 28 & 29. The Colonials again won both games at their second annual Classic with seniors Jessica and Jazmine Adair and Antelia Parrish leading the way. All-Tourney selection Parrish averaged 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in the two games, while Jazmine Adair hit a pair of clutch free throws with six seconds left to cap GW's game-ending 7-0 run in its title-game comeback victory over Hartford.
The last time GW met Tennessee Dec. 7, 2006, Jessica Adair scored a then career-high 23 points and #21/19 GW pulled within four three times in the second half, but the home-standing Lady Vols used a 21-3 run midway through the final period to come away with an 85-62 victory. UT converted 23-of-28 free throws in the game, compared to 8-of-10 for GW, and held a commanding 40-20 edge in rebounds, which led to 23 second-chance points for the Lady Vols.
No. 7/12 Tennessee (5-1), the two-time defending national champion, rides a four-game winning streak into Tuesday's visit to GW. The Lady Vols, whose lone loss came at home against Virginia Nov. 17, have won their last four games by an average of 21.5 points, including an 88-67 romp over DePaul at UT's Thompson-Boling Arena Sunday night. Freshmen leading scorers Glory Johnson and Shekinna Strickland led UT with 19 and 16 points, respectively, against the Blue Demons in a fast-paced game featuring 142 combined shots, 93 total rebounds and 36 total turnovers. Returning starter Angie Bjorklund saw her first action of the season versus DePaul, adding five points and seven boards in 25 minutes off the bench.
Led by 34-year head coach Pat Summitt, who enters Tuesday with an NCAA record 988 victories, Tennessee is women's college basketball most storied program with eight national titles (1987, 1989, 1991, 1996-98, 2007-08), 10 AP All-America players, 27 consecutive Sweet 16 appearances, 13 SEC Tournament championships, and 1,081 victories, the most in NCAA Division I women's basketball.
