GW's Jackson, Schaible Sweep A-10 Weekly Awards
Jackson Named Player of the Week, Schaible Earns Rookie of the Week Following Win Over American
Dec. 30, 2013
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington graduate student Danni Jackson was named Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week and freshman Hannah Schaible was tabbed Rookie of the Week for games played Dec. 23-29, the league announced on Monday.
Jackson matched her career high with 23 points and added four assists and three rebounds in GW's 77-64 win over crosstown rival American on Saturday. The Dumfries, Va., native connected on 10-of-22 shots, including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. Jackson scored 13 points in the first half as GW built a 17-point halftime advantage. In addition, she curbed an AU rally with back-to-back three-pointers midway through the second half to give the Colonials a game-high 21-point lead.
It was Jackson's second straight game with more than 20 points, raising her season scoring average by two full points in that span to 12.0 points per game, ranking second on the team. She also leads GW and ranks sixth in the Atlantic 10 with 4.6 assists per contest. In addition, the graduate student recently became the third Colonial ever with 1,000 points and 400 assists, and she ranks sixth all-time at GW with 410 career assists and 23rd with 1,110 points.
The Player of the Week award is the second of Jackson's career, as she also earned the honor on Dec. 24, 2012, and she is the first Colonial to win the award twice in her career since Sarah-Jo Lawrence ('08). In addition, it marks the first time two Colonials have been named Player of the Week in the same season since Lawrence and Kimberly Beck in 2007-08, as grad student Megan Nipe also earned the honor on Nov. 18.
Schaible stuffed the stat sheet in GW's win over American, recording 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. The Orlando, Fla., native connected on 6-of-9 shots and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the foul line, and four of her five rebounds were on the offensive glass. In addition, the 15 points were one shy of her career high. Schaible scored 13 points in the first half as GW took a 51-34 halftime lead, and she ignited both of GW's big runs in the opening period.
Schaible is averaging 7.6 points per game and ranks seventh in the Atlantic 10 with 2.2 steals per contest.
The Rookie of the Week award is the first of Schaible's career. She is the second Colonial to be recognized as the league's top rookie this season, as Caira Washington received the distinction on Dec. 16, marking the first time the Colonials have received a pair of Rookie of the Week honors in the same season since Tiana Meyers won it twice in 2008-09 and the first time two different players have won the award since Jessica Adair and Jazmine Adair in 2005-06.
The Colonials return to action on Tuesday when they host Bluefield State at 12 p.m. in their non-conference finale.
