LEXINGTON, KY - The Colonials opened their 2003 campaign on Friday, Jan. 10, by participating in the University of Kentucky's 20th Annual "Excite Night." Unfortunately, the women came up a few points short, losing by a score of 193.625 - 191.500, in front of a strong crowd of 6, 215 at Lexington's Memorial Coliseum.

Junior Rachel Mann (Atlanta, GA/Lakeside) led the Colonials with an all-around total of 38.725, including a first place finish on floor with a 9.800. She was followed by freshman Heather Kaufman (Austin, TX/McCallum) who finished with an all-around score of 37.925.

The Colonials started the evening on bars where freshman Tiffany Jones (Ravenna, OH/Walsh Jesuit) led the team with a score of 9.625. The women fell behind 48.150 - 46.425 after the first rotation and were unable to close the gap the rest of the night.

On their next event, both Mann and fellow captain, junior Lindsay Parks (Council Bluffs, IA/Abraham Lincoln) scored 9.750 on the vault, but the Colonials fell a few tenths short on the apparatus by a score of 48.625 - 48.325.

After the intermission, the Colonials came out strong on the floor exercise where Mann achieved the highest score for GW of the night, a 9.800. Parks and Kaufman also scored well to help the team win its only apparatus of the night, 48.600 - 48.150.

Entering the final event, GW needed a strong performance on beam and was able to score well, but just couldn't catch the Wildcats. Sophomore Meagan Wilson (Lilburn, GA/Parkview) established a personal best with a score of 9.750 and was followed by Kaufman who had a 9.650, but Kentucky took the event 48.700 - 48.150.

The gymnasts must turn their attention to the GW Invitational, which will take place at the Smith Center at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16. The Colonials will host gymnasts from Cornell, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Rutgers, Temple and William & Mary.
