Maryland Edges Out Gymnastics

McCalla Wins All-Around; Mantak Captures Third

WASHINGTON, DC (Jan. 25) - The George Washington women's gymnastics team lost to the University of Maryland Friday night at the second meet of their season. Despite a solid effort and team members who placed first and third in the all-around, Maryland edged out GW, 194.550-193.850.

Seniors Devin McCalla (Dallas, TX/J.J. Pearce) and Jessica Mantak (Colonia, NJ/Wardlaw-Hartridge) captured first and third in the all-around for the second meet in a row. McCalla achieved her 2001 season high with her combined score of 39.450. Her 9.800 on vault tied her for first with Maryland senior Lisa Mealey for that apparatus, while she placed third on bars (9.850) and second on beam with a 9.900. McCalla also had a 9.900 performance on the floor exercise, which earned her first place in that event. Mantak had a solid night, improving on her all-around score from last week. She finished the night with a combined score of 38.675.

GW is now 5-1 for the season. The Colonials' next compete on Saturday, February 2nd at West Virginia with Kentucky and Massachusetts.
