GW Gymnastics Sets Vault Record at Brownie & Girl Scout Meet
Colonials Shatter Previous Mark on Vault as Raineri Earns Share of Title For Fourth Straight Meet
Feb. 9, 2014
WASHINGTON - The George Washington gymnastics team set a new program record on the vault on the way to a third-place finish at Sunday's Brownie & Girl Scout Meet at the Charles E. Smith Center.
East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival Rutgers won the event with a team score of 194.500 with William & Mary taking second place with 194.375. The Colonials totaled 193.300.
GW set a new program record on the vault with a team score of 49.225, shattering the previous mark of 49.050, which was in both 1994 and 2004. The Colonials added team scores of 48.625 on uneven bars, 46.600 on balance beam and 48.850 on floor exercise
Freshman Chelsea Raineri earned a share of the vault title for the fourth consecutive meet with a season-high 9.925, the third-best vault routine in program history. Raineri tied with William & Mary's Brittany Stover for first place while junior Elena Corcoran added a career-high 9.90 for third place. Corcoran joins Raineri as one of 10 gymnasts in program history to achieve the 9.90 threshold in the event.
Raineri also found the podium on the uneven bars, finishing in a tie for third place with a score of 9.825. She added a 9.750 on floor exercise to tie for sixth place.
Graduate student Kayla Carto won the floor exercise with a career-high tying 9.850 while senior Taylor Henderson and Corcoran tied for third place with 9.775. Carto also placed third overall in the all-around with 38.875.
Senior Kiera Kenney finished in fifth place on uneven bars with a 9.80.
The Colonials return to action on Monday evening in an all-EAGL quad meet at Maryland with Towson and Pittsburgh at Comcast Center at 7 p.m.
