Gymnastics Finishes Runner-Up at Towson With Score of 192.125

TOWSON, MD - Led by career-best performances from sophomore Carolyn Marckesano (Reston, VA) in the floor exercise and sophomore Abbey Myles (Waxhaw, NC) on uneven bars, the George Washington gymnastics team finished runner-up Saturday evening with a team total of 192.125 at the Shelli Calloway Memorial Invitational hosted by Towson.

GW finished with scores of 48.600 on vault, 48.550 on bars, 46.150 on beam and 48.825 on floor. The Colonials' marks on vault and in the floor exercise were both season bests. The host Tigers won the five-team meet with a team total of 192.775.

Senior Heather Kaufman (Austin, TX) was GW's top performer on vault with a season-high score of 9.775 to place third overall out of 30 competitors, while senior Erin Aiken (Centreville, VA) and freshman Kristen Simpson (Surfside, SC) tied for fourth with respective marks of 9.75. Senior Amy Stack (Matthews, NC) claimed sixth with a 9.675.

A pair of career-best scores from Myles and sophomore McKenzie Parrack (Richardson, TX) led the Colonials on uneven bars. Myles recorded a mark of 9.8 to claim second overall in the event, while Parrack notched a 9.775 to take third. Aiken had a 9.675 to place fifth.

On beam, junior Jess Guilbert (Roswell, GA) and senior co-captain Tiffany Jones (Ravenna, OH) led the way with each scoring a 9.525 to share runners-up honors. Simpson also made her way into the top five with a score of 9.5 for fifth.

 

 

Marckesano led GW's contingent on floor as she was one of five Colonials to set season-high marks in the event. Her career-high 9.825 and Aiken's own career-high tying 9.825 each tied them for third overall, while Guilbert and Kaufman shared fifth place with respective 9.775's. Myles, competing on floor for the first time, recorded a mark of 9.625 to finish in a tie for 11th along with Stack.

Aiken once again was GW's lone representative in the all-around and she finished second overall out of 11 with a season-high total of 38.550.

GW returns to action when it travels to Raleigh, NC, on Friday, Feb. 24, for a quad meet hosted by EAGL member NC State, along with fellow conference member North Carolina and Denver. The competition is set for 7 p.m.
