Gymnastics Posts Season-High Score of 194.4 in Victory Over Towson

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University senior co-captain Erin Aiken (Centreville, VA) recorded a career-high total of 39.000 to win the all-around title, senior co-captain Tiffany Jones (Ravenna, OH) won the balance beam title with a season-high 9.8 and the Colonials posted season-high event totals on beam and in the floor exercise to defeat Towson with a season-best mark of 194.4 Wednesday evening at Smith Center. The Colonials recorded scores of 48.725 on vault, 48.45 on bars, 48.25 on beam and 48.975 on floor. GW's totals on balance beam and floor were both season bests. Towson finished with a score of 192.05. GW led off the dual competition on vault and it was led by freshman Kristen Simpson's (Surfside, SC) 9.8, which placed her second overall in the event. Simpson was coming off a career-best mark of 9.9 set at North Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 26. Aiken and junior Maggie Parrack (Richardson, TX) tied for third with respective scores of 9.75, while sophomore Carolyn Marckesano (Reston, VA) equaled her season high with a 9.7. On bars, GW was led by freshman Bree Plotsker (Wantagh, NY), who set a new season best with a 9.75 to finish runner-up in the event. Aiken equaled her season high with a 9.725 to take third. Sophomore McKenzie Parrack (Richardson, TX) also tied for third with a 9.725. Jones led a first through fourth sweep for the Colonials on balance beam as four individuals set season bests. Simpson took second with a season-high 9.725, followed by season bests from Aiken (3rd, 9.675) and junior Jess Guilbert (Roswell, GA) (4th, 9.65).
The Colonials held just a .100 lead heading into their final event on floor. With Aiken setting a new career best and three more gymnasts posting season highs, GW easily clinched the victory with its best score in the event all season. Aiken score a 9.85 to finish runner-up, while Stack (t-4th, 9.8), Guilbert (t-4th, 9.8) and senior Heather Kaufman (Austin, TX) (6th, 9.775) either set a season-high mark or equaled it. In the all-around, Aiken claimed her first title of the season with a career-best total of 39.00. She had scores of 9.75 on vault, 9.725 on bars, 9.675 on beam and 9.85 on floor. GW returns to the mats this Sunday, March 5, when it hosts Central Michigan at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center at 1 p.m. |
