Gymnastics Grabs Win With a Team Effort

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's gymnastics team grabbed first in all events tonight when they beat the James Madison Dukes 194.300 to 184.300 at the Smith Center. The Colonials also managed five season best scores in their second to last home meet this year. Senior Devin McCalla (Dallas, TX/J.J. Pearce) led the Colonials by winning the all-around with a score of 39.325. This is her fourth first place finish in the all-around this season. McCalla's performance was highlighted by 9.875 on the vault, a new career high, as well as first place on the apparatus for the meet. She also placed first on the floor exercise with a 9.875, third on the uneven bars (9.775) and second on the balance beam (9.800). Also posting high scores and a tie for first place on the uneven bars is sophomore Rachel Mann (Atlanta, GA/Lakeside). Mann scored a career high on bars with a 9.800. She also finished second on the floor exercise with a 9.850 and tied teammate senior Jamie McNally (Old Bridge, NJ/Bishop Ahr) for second on the vault. Mann shares first place on the uneven bars with freshman Amber Melvin (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Morian) who also marked a career high score with her routine. Melvin took third on the balance beam (9.775) and tied senior Jessica Mantak (Colonia, NJ/Wardlaw-Hartridge) for fourth on the vault (9.550). Mantak also managed first on the balance beam with a season best score of 9.850 and third on the floor exercise (9.825). She took second in the all-around with a score of 38.475, GW will return to the Smith Center for competition on Saturday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. when Michigan State University visits Washington, DC.
