Gymnastics Takes Second To Ohio State In Home Finale

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University gymnastics team finished second with a score of 193.0 in their home finale on Sunday afternoon against Ohio State and Rhode Island. Ohio State took the tri-meet with a score of 195.150, followed by the Colonials, and Rhode Island with 187.075.

The Colonials started their day on the vault and scored a 48.325, good for second place after the first rotation. Junior McKenzie Parrack led the Colonials with a 9.825 while sophomore Kristen Simpson scored a 9.8. McKenzie won the meet on the floor while Simpson finished third. Seniors Emily Howarth and Jess Guilbert also had solid performances with scores of 9.725 and 9.575, respectively. Ohio State finished the first rotation in the lead with a 49.15, followed by GW and Rhode Island with a 46.35.

GW was on the uneven parallel bars for the second rotation and scored a 48.375 as every Colonial scored over a 9.6. Senior Abbey Myles and Junior McKenzie led the way with 9.7s. Junior Gillian Coleman and Freshman Christa Devine tied for third on the team with a 9.675 while freshman Megan Quinn also scored a 9.625. After rotation two the overall standings remained intact with 97.4, GW with 96.7, and Rhode Island with 94.5.

The Colonials responded nicely from two tough falls and scored a 47.775 on the beam for the third rotation. Junior Gillian Coleman and freshman Lindsay Tom tied for the team lead with a 9.75 and third overall, both season highs. Junior Carolyn Marckesano also had a solid showing with a 9.575. After three rotations Ohio State is in the lead with 146.175, followed by GW with 144.475, and Rhode Island with 141.825.

The Colonials finished up the meet on floor with a 48.525. The Parrack sisters, Maggie and McKenzie led the team with a 9.8 and 9.75, respectively. The 9.8 earned Maggie the meet victory on the floor. Gillian Coleman and Jess Guilbert tied for third on the team with a 9.675 and Carolyn Marckesano rounded out the top five with a 9.625.

The Colonials will be back in action on Friday, March 23 at 7:00 pm, when they travel to North Carolina to take on the host Tar Heels, William & Mary, and Rhode Island in a quad-meet. GW will close out its regular season at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships on Friday, March 30 at 6:00 pm, at the Comcast Center in College Park, MD.
