George Washington Athletics to Host 2014 Homecoming This Weekend
Bonfire, Squash, GW AHOF Induction, Tailgate, Men's Basketball, Gymnastics Highlight Weekend

WASHINGTON - The George Washington University Department of Athletics and Recreation will proudly host Homecoming, February 7-9, in Foggy Bottom. Highlighting the weekend of activities is the induction of the 50th class of GW Athletic Hall of Famers and a pregame tailgate party prior to the men's basketball game vs. Fordham on Saturday, sandwiched between a Friday night bonfire, Saturday squash matches and a Sunday afternoon gymnastics meet.
"Our goal is to make Homecoming bigger and better every year, and this year Homecoming will deliver a variety of ways for all GW alumni to come back and connect with their alma mater," noted Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Tickets Nicole Early. "With several of our best athletics teams in action at home this weekend, along with the induction of seven new GW Athletic Hall of Famers, we encourage all GW alumni to `Raise High' with pride around the outstanding accomplishments we're seeing around campus."
Homecoming begins on Friday, February 7th with `George's Birthday Bonfire' at 6:00 p.m. in University Yard. The bonfire - in celebration of the namesake of the university - offers students, alumni and fans the opportunity to mix and mingle while enjoying free food and entertainment. GW President Steven Knapp will be on hand for the bonfire which will be emceed by women's cross country junior Erica Halvorson.
Saturday's festivities begin at 11:00 a.m. when GW's nationally ranked men's and women's squash teams take on Virginia on Senior Day at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts in the Lerner Health and Wellness Center. Later in the day the teams will host Bucknell at 5:00 p.m.
Meanwhile at noon, GW Athletics will officially induct the Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2014, which includes Mike Brey '82 (men's basketball), Tim Champney '00 (men's swimming), Greg Conden '03 (baseball), Kwame Evans '96 (men's basketball), Cathy Joens '04 (women's basketball), Elana Meyers '07 (softball) and Kim Warner '04 (women's soccer).
At 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, students, alumni and fans are invited to get ready for the GW men's basketball game vs. Fordham at a free pre-game tailgate at the Lerner Health and Wellness Center (REGISTER). Free food, drinks, games and entertainment will be provided, while new Hall of Famers Champney, Conden, Evans, Joens and Warner will be recognized. Also on hand at the pregame tailgate will be select GW men's basketball alumni who have been a part of the team's 100-season history. Head Coach Mike Lonergan and Athletic Director Patrick Nero will make remarks as well at the tailgate party inside LHWC.
Fans will then cross 23rd St. for the men's basketball game at 4:00 p.m. (BUY TICKETS). At the game members of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Champion women's rowing Varsity 8 boat will be recognized, as well as two GW men's swimmers who claimed gold at the 2013 A-10 Championships.
To wrap Homecoming on Sunday, February 9th, the ladies of GW gymnastics vaults to prominence in their second home meet of the season at the Charles E. Smith Center at 1:00 p.m. (BUY TICKETS). GW takes on Rutgers and William & Mary after securing top honors for the second straight season in their first home meet of the year - the annual Lindsey Ferris Invitational.
