Feb. 11, 2002

WASHINGTON, DC - Freshman Amber Melvin (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Morian HS) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for Gymnastics, the league office has announced. The award is the first Atlantic 10 honor of her career.

Melvin competed in three events as George Washington finished third at the University of North Carolina tri-meet on Feb. 9. She finished eighth overall on the beam with a score of 9.575. Her score of 9.625 on the vault was good for 10th, while her 9.575 on the bars placed 12th. Her vault score tied for the 13th-highest in the A-10 this season.

GW posted a score of 191.900 to place third behind Bowling Green State University (192.675) and the University of North Carolina (193.825) Saturday in Chapel Hill, NC.

The Colonials resume competition Wednesday, Feb. 13, when they host Maryland in a 7:00 p.m. meet at Smith Center.
