Colonials Athletics Weekend Preview
Lacrosse Hosts Long Island While Gymnastics, Softball, Women's Tennis and Women's Water Polo All Hit the Road

A preview of George Washington's athletic events this weekend. The Colonials lacrosse team will host Long Island at Mount Vernon Field on Saturday while the gymnastics, women's tennis, women's water polo and softball teams all hit the road.

The George Washington lacrosse team will host Long Island on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field.
The Colonials (1-1) are coming off a 15-10 loss at Drexel last Sunday. Senior Sarah Phillips led GW with three goals and an assist, while junior Nicole Lacey matched her own single-game program record with 10 draw controls. Phillips leads the Colonials with seven goals and 10 points so far this season. In addition, senior Hilary Quinn was tabbed the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week after recording five ground balls, eight draw controls and two caused turnovers in the first week of the season.
The Blackbirds open their season Saturday against the Colonials. LIU was picked to finish 10th in the Northeast Conference preseason poll after posting a 1-15 overall mark in 2011. Sophomore Katie Williams, an NEC All-Rookie Team selection a year ago, is the Blackbirds' top returning scorer, as she tallied 22 goals and 27 points, as well as 29 ground balls, 27 draw controls and 13 caused turnovers in her initial campaign.
Saturday's game marks the first-ever meeting between GW and Long Island.

The George Washington gymnastics team will conclude its six-meet road swing with a visit to EAGL rival North Carolina for a dual meet on Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Carmichael Arena.
Last week, GW scored a season-high 48.600 on the floor exercise but it was not enough as the Colonials fell at in a dual meet Central Michigan, 193.600-192.075. Junior Stephanie Stoicovy led the Colonials on the floor, who scored 9.800 for fourth place, while senior Amanda Murphy and Betsy Zander tied for sixth at 9.725. Stoicovy currently ranks 12th in the EAGL with a 9.775 average on the floor.
Sophomore Kiera Kenney enters this weekend ranked 13th in the EAGL on uneven bars, averaging 9.710 per routine while freshman Elena Corcoran leads the Colonials and ranks 16th in the EAGL on the vault.
The meet marks the second of three times the Colonials and Tar Heels will compete against each other. UNC won the Lindsey Ferris Invitational on Jan. 15, and the teams will meet a third time at the EAGL Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa., on March 24.
WOMEN'S WATER POLO
The George Washington women's water polo team will travel to Princeton for the CWPA vs. MAAC Weekend, where the Colonials will take on Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foes Villanova, Siena, Wagner and Iona.
The Colonials (2-1) already defeated Villanova (0-7) by a score of 15-7 at the season-opening Princeton Invitational on Feb. 11, and the teams will face off once again on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. Later that day the Colonials will battle it out against the Saints (4-7) at 6:30 p.m.
On Sunday GW takes on the Seahawks (7-4) at 10:45 a.m. and the Gaels (2-0) at 3:15 p.m. Wagner is coming off a 12-11 loss to Brown, a team the Colonials defeated at the Princeton Invite, while like GW, one of Iona's two wins this season came against Villanova on Feb. 4.
Freshman attacker Meagan Moreland was named Southern Division Rookie of the Week by The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) for her performance at the Princeton Invitational Feb. 11-12, when she garnered four goals, three assists and five steals. In addition, sophomore Rachael Bentley led the Colonials with with nine goals, five assists and 14 points on the weekend to earn GW's Colonial of the Week award.
The George Washington softball team will play four games this weekend in Columbia, S.C., at the South Carolina Gamecock Invitational.
The Colonials return to the state of South Carolina for the second time in three weeks after opening the season with four tough contests at the Kickin' Chicken Classic at Coastal Carolina. Junior Autumn Taylor strung together a series of notable efforts, compiling two home runs, five RBIs and a .500 batting average over the course of the weekend.
GW squares off with Appalachian State (4-4) in back-to-back games on Friday, Feb. 24 at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., followed by a 10 a.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 25 against Elon (5-2). The Colonials close out the weekend against host South Carolina (6-3) on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m.
Appalachian State is on a two-game winning streak after defeating North Carolina Central (12-1, 6-1) in a pair of games last Saturday. Elon is currently on a two-game skid after falling to Bucknell (0-2) and James Madison (4-7) in back-to-back contests last weekend, and South Carolina is coming off a 9-1 win over Winthrop on Wednesday.

The George Washington women's tennis team will face off with Atlantic 10 foe Temple on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Philadelphia, Pa. The Colonials' match scheduled with James Madison on Saturday afternoon has been postponed, with a makeup date yet to be determined.
GW is coming off a 1-1 weekend against conference opponents Xavier and Duquesne. The Buff and Blue dropped a tight match to the Musketeers on Saturday by a 4-3 margin, but bounced back to defeat the Dukes, 4-3, on Sunday.
Sophomore Leah Pascarella went 1-1 in singles action and 2-0 in doubles play last weekend to pace the Colonials.
Temple is coming off a 1-1 weekend, falling to No. 73 Syracuse, 1-6, before blanking Binghamton, 7-0.
Action against the Owls is set to take place at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
