Melvin Receives Second Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Honor

Feb. 28, 2002

WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 27) - Freshman Amber Melvin (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Morian HS) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for Gymnastics, the league office has announced. Melvin's honor is the second conference award she has received in her college career.

At GW's meet on Saturday, February 23 in Kingston, RI against the URI, Melvin competed in three events, finishing in the top three in two. She managed a third place finish on vault with a 9.700 and tied for second on the balance beam scoring a 9.825, which marks her best in that event to date. Her performances contributed to the Colonials 194.950-194.025 win over the Rams.

Melvin's scores rank among some of the top in the Atlantic 10. She is 10th on the uneven bars (9.800) and fourth on both the balance beam (9.825) and the vault (9.775). She has achieved the highest scores among A-10 freshman on beam and vault to date.

Melvin was first recognized this season on February 11 with an Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. Her first conference honor recognized her performances at the University of North Carolina on February 9 in a tri-meet with Bowling Green State University.

Melvin and the Colonials next compete on Friday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. in Raleigh, NC at the Wolfpack Invitational, when they face Central Michigan, James Madison, NC State, North Carolina and William and Mary.
