Melvin Named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the Fourth Time

March 19, 2002

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington freshman Amber Melvin (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Morian HS) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for Gymnastics, the league office has announced. Melvin's honor is the fourth honor she has received in her college career.

On Friday, March 15, at Kent State in Kent, OH, Melvin finished tied for fourth on the uneven bars with her new career-high score of 9.825. She also scored a 9.700 on the balance beam and a 9.725 on the vault. Her performances contributed to GW's highest team score of the season, a 195.600.

Melvin's scores rank among some of the top in the Atlantic 10. She is tied for 9th on the uneven bars (9.825) and fifth on both the balance beam (9.825) and the vault (9.775). She has achieved the highest scores among A-10 freshman on beam and vault to date.

Melvin was first recognized this season on February 11 with an Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. Her first conference honor recognized her performances at the University of North Carolina on February 9 in a tri-meet with Bowling Green State University. On February 24, her second Atlantic 10 honor recognized her performances while visiting Rhode Island. At that meet she managed to finish in the top three in two events. She received her third Atlantic 10 honor on March 10 for tying for first on the uneven bars against James Madison.

Melvin and the Colonials next compete at the Atlantic 10 Championships hosted by the University of Rhode Island on Saturday, March 23.
