Gymnastics' Aiken, Simpson Earn All-EAGL Honors
March 25, 2006
PISCATAWAY, NJ - George Washington University senior Erin Aiken (Centreville, VA/Chantilly) and freshman Kristen Simpson (Surfside, SC/Socastee) each earned All-East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) honors, as announced Friday evening at the EAGL Awards Dinner on the eve of the 2006 conference championship. Aiken was named to the second team on both floor exercise and in the all-around for the second straight year, while Simpson earned second team honors on vault.
Aiken had season highs of 9.85 on floor and 39.00 in the all-around. Both marks also were career bests for the senior co-captain. She scored 38.125 or better in the all-around seven times during the season and five times scored 9.8 or higher on floor exercise. Aiken, who was the Colonials lone all-around performer this season, twice won the all-around title during the year at back-to-back competitions against Towson and Central Michigan.
Simpson, meanwhile, posted a career-high 9.9 on vault at North Carolina on Feb. 26 and boasted the second-best average on the team in the event. Her 9.9 ranks her tied for second all-time at GW on vault and she was just the seventh Colonial since 1994 to record a 9.9 in the event. In 10-of-12 meets during the regular season, Simpson posted at least a 9.7 or better on vault.
Last season, Aiken earned second team All-EAGL honors on vault, floor exercise and in the all-around, while former Colonial Meagan Wilson and senior co-captain Tiffany Jones (Ravenna, OH) each earned second team accolades on balance beam and uneven bars, respectively.
The EAGL Awards Dinner precedes the 11th annual EAGL Championship meet, which will be held Saturday, March 25, at Rutgers University's Louis Brown Athletic Center beginning at 6 p.m. GW placed fifth at last year's championship in its first year in the conference with a score of 194.2. North Carolina, led by 2006 EAGL Gymnast and Senior Gymnast of the Year Courtney Bumpers, is the defending champion.
