Trio of Gymnasts Set to Compete at NCAA Southeast Region Championships

April 7, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC - GW juniors Erin Aiken (Centreville, VA), Heather Kaufman (Austin, TX) and Amy Stack (Matthews, NC) will represent the Colonials' gymnastics team at the 2005 NCAA Southeast Region Championships, set for Saturday, April 9, at 6 p.m. at the O'Connell Center in Gainesville, FL. The championships, hosted by the University of Florida, are one of six regional competitions across the country on Saturday.

Aiken and Kaufman each qualified for the championships in the all-around, while Stack earned the coveted single qualifying spot on vault. The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships in Auburn, AL, April 21-23.

The event winners at the championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.

Aiken boasted the third-best regional qualifying score (RQS) among the five individual all-around competitors with a mark of 38.590, while Kaufman had the fourth-best score at 37.575.

During the regular season in GW's first year as a member of the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL), Aiken, who earned All-EAGL honors in two events and in the all-around, set a new career-best in the all-around with a score 38.9 and equaled her personal-best on floor with a 9.8 on two separate occasions. Stack, meanwhile, was the Colonials' most consistent performer on vault as she recorded at least a 9.625 in 12 of 14 meets and registered a season-high of 9.8 twice. Kaufman, who competed in the all-around at six meets during the year, owns a career-best of 39.050 and recorded a season-high of 38.15.

The 2005 NCAA Southeast Region Championships, hosted by Florida, begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center in Gainesville, FL.
