Gymnastics Announces 2018 Captains
Zois and McLaughlin to lead Colonials in 2019
WASHINGTON – George Washington gymnastics rising graduate student Alex Zois and rising senior Julia McLaughlin have been voted to serve as co-captains for the 2018 season, head coach Margie Foster-Cunningham announced.
Both gymnasts have played a huge role in the recent success of the GW Gymnastics program. The duo will lead together as the Colonials look to return to NCAA Regionals for the fifth consecutive year after postseason trips to Auburn, AL (2015), Athens, GA (2016), Morgantown, WV (2017), and Raleigh, NC (2018).
The last time that GW made five consecutive NCAA Regionals appearances as a team was between 1991-1995.
Zois is coming off of yet another standout season where she debuted in the all-around and became a consistent performer, earning All-East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) First Team honors in the process. The Crofton, Maryland, native, posted a season- and career-high score of 39.400 on Senior Day behind a career-high tying performance on vault (9.825), a 9.775 on uneven bars, and season- and career-high 9.900s on balance beam and floor exercise. She was also selected to the All-EAGL Second Team for vault, balance beam, and floor exercise.
McLaughlin had a career-best season for the Colonials in 2018, posting personal-best scores of 9.800 on vault and a 9.800 on uneven bars. The psychology major has been a mainstay in GW’s vault and bars lineups throughout her career and completed eight vault performances of 9.700 or better this past season. McLaughlin was also named to the All-EAGL Scholastic Team in both 2017 and 2018.
