The GW lacrosse team announced the addition of Kelyn Freedman as assistant coach in November 2016. A former assistant coach at Niagara University and a four-year lacrosse player at Georgetown University, Freedman joins GW head coach Tracy Coyne and assistant coach Kelly Lechner.
"We are very excited to have Kelyn join the coaching staff," said Coyne. "She clearly stood out as the best candidate during the interviewing process. Kelyn is a fierce competitor with a true commitment to winning. Her success as a student-athlete at Georgetown and passion for the game make her a perfect fit for GW."
As an assistant coach at Niagara University, Freedman's primary responsibility was coaching the defense and transition strategy and facilitating the development of players. Under her leadership in 2016, the Purple Eagles recorded the second-most wins in a season in program history, finishing the regular season at 9-8 before falling to Fairfield University in the first round of the MAAC Championship. Niagara also posted its first ever five-win season in MAAC play and improved from 12.6 GAA to 9.8 GAA.
In her four years at Georgetown, Freedman played in 67 games (41 starts) and totaled 98 goals and 22 assists for 120 points. As a senior and captain in 2014, Freedman led Georgetown in goals (37), ground balls (33), draw controls (47), and free-position goals (15), and was second in points (45) to help the Hoyas advance to a second-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. Freedman collected unanimous nominations for the All Big-East First Team and IWLCA Second Team All-South Region that year.
"As we strive to build the program, Kelyn will set the right tone by being a positive role model and an enthusiastic coach," said Coyne. "She understands how to successfully manage the academic & time demands of D1 athletics. Both she & Kelly have played at the highest level of D1 lacrosse, and sharing those experiences with our players gives us an advantage. The dynamic Kelyn will bring to the team will only serve to make us better."
A native of Radnor, Pennsylvania, Freedman brings experience as a coach and camp director to the GW program as well, directing the Raider Lacrosse Camp in Philadelphia in addition to coaching experience with the STEPS lacrosse club.
"I am grateful to be given the opportunity to work at George Washington," said Freedman. "It is a wonderful institution with a great opportunity for the student athletes. I am looking forward to doing everything that I can to help this team get to the next level."
Freedman graduated from Georgetown in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in marketing and management, and graduated from Niagara University in 2016 with a Master of Science in Sports Management.
