The GW lacrosse team announced the addition of Meg Bartley as assistant coach in October 2017. A former assistant coach at Franklin & Marshall and Virginia Tech, Bartley joins head coach Tracy Coyne and assistant coach Kelyn Freedman.
"We are thrilled to have Meg joining the staff," said Coyne. "She stood out in the candidate pool as a perfect fit for GW. I loved her background. She played college lacrosse at an ACC school and was coaching at a very competitive DIII school, Franklin & Marshall. F&M is always in the mix to win a national championship so Meg gained valuable experience in how to prepare a team for championship play."
As an assistant coach at Franklin & Marshall, Bartley's primary responsibility was working with the midfield and draw team to teach and develop offensive strategies. Under her leadership in 2017, the Diplomats finished the season as the Centennial Conference Champions and made it to the Sweet Sixteen in the DIII NCAA tournament. In addition to her responsibilities on the field, Bartley placed a strong focus on student-athlete development and created a leadership curriculum for her players.
Prior to her time at Franklin & Marshall, Bartley spent the 2016 season as a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, Virginia Tech, where she helped plan and facilitate practices.
As a four-year starter at Virginia Tech, Bartley helped lead her team to four straight ACC tournaments and was named the team's Rookie of the Year in 2012. A dominating force on offense, she played in 67 games (63 starts) and totaled 113 goals and 21 assists for 134 points throughout her career. The attacker is also the current Tech record holder for most career draws (285) and ranks 14th in NCAA history for career draws per game (4.25).
"As an NCAA record holder in draw controls, Meg's success as a draw specialist will also be very beneficial to our program," said Coyne. "Winning the draw is a crucial part of the game. I know she will bring a fresh perspective on how we can excel in this area. I am excited to welcome Meg to our program."
A native of Lewes, Delaware, Bartley brings experience as a coach and camp director to GW as well, directing the PJ Kesmodel's Lacrosse Camp in addition to coaching experience with the Xtreme Club lacrosse team.
"Joining the GW squad is a big honor and I'm very excited for the work ahead," said Bartley. "I just got to D.C, but I already feel like a Colonial thanks to Coach Coyne, the rest of the staff, and our student-athletes. There's a solid group of returners to build around and a crop of newcomers who I'm excited to work with. I look forward to the next step with this team in the A-10."
Barley graduated from Virginia Tech in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in marketing management.
