Feb. 16, 2011
WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's lacrosse juniors Megan Seidman and Sarah Phillips each totaled seven points to help the Colonials cruise past Howard, 21-3, in their season opener at Mount Vernon Field Wednesday afternoon.
Seidman scored six goals - one off the program record of seven - and added an assist, while Phillips finished with a hat trick and game-high four assists to pace GW (1-0).
Freshman Jordy Bathras also provided a hat trick and chipped in two assists in her collegiate debut. Four other Colonials finished with three points - seniors Mia Breheny (2g/1a) and Audrey Joy (2g/1a), sophomore Logan Healy (1g/2a) and rookie Terasa Vassallo (2g/1a).
Sophomore Nicole Lacey, who last season set a new program record with 55 draw controls, matched the single-game school record in the category with nine and added a goal and an assist. GW led 18-7 in draw controls and 22-10 in ground balls.
Seidman got things started with back-to-back goals in the opening 1:53 of the contest for an early 2-0 lead, but the Bison answered with consecutive goals from Desiree Cox to even it at 2-2 with just 3:26 elapsed.
The Colonials dominated from that point, scoring the game's next 18 goals while keeping the Bison scoreless for more than 53 minutes. Joy scored at the halftime buzzer to give GW a 16-2 lead at intermission.
Cox, who finished seventh in the nation with 68 goals last season, ended the Howard (0-1) drought with 3:08 left to make it 20-3, but Breheny tacked on a final goal with 1:30 remaining for the 21-3 margin.
GW allowed Howard to clear just three of its 20 attempts. Sophomore Casey Disharoon forced a team-high three of the Bison's 24 turnovers.
GW hosts Drexel at Mount Vernon Field this Saturday at 1:00 pm. Fans who cannot make it to the game can view the action via GW All-Access.
