WASHINGTON -- On a snowy day on the Mount Vernon Campus, the George Washington lacrosse team continued its hot start to the 2018 season by downing Longwood, 16-8, on Saturday afternoon in its home opener. After building a 10-3 lead to close the first half, the Colonials never relinquished their advantage and held Longwood to only 17 shots on goal to finish the day victorious.

The senior co-captain duo of Jocelyn Donohue and Brooke Sands opened the scoring for the Colonials, with Sands finding Donohue in the first two minutes of play to earn an early edge. The Lancers responded one minute later, but GW was able to regain the lead with a goal from Katie Quinn off another assist from Sands to spur a 6-0 run. Longwood broke the Colonials' offensive onslaught with a goal at the 8:49 mark, but GW battled back with three more goals to close the half with an even 10. The Lancers found the back of the net once more to cut the deficit to seven with the score at 10-3 going into the break.

The Colonials continued their dominance on the attack with three consecutive goals to start the second half, while the GW defense held strong and prevented the Lancers from scoring until the 16:59 mark. The Buff and Blue responded with three more goals to increase the lead to 12 (16-4) with 10 minutes to play. Longwood attempted to rally back and scored four more goals, but it wasn't enough as GW took the 16-8 decision.
