Lacrosse Opens Season With 12-8 Loss to No. 7 Johns Hopkins

Feb. 26, 2006

Final Stats

WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington women's lacrosse team battled hard before dropping a 12-8 decision to 7th-ranked Johns Hopkins in the season-opener for both teams Sunday at GW's Mount Vernon Field. The Blue Jays outscored the Colonials 9-5 in the second half to pull away from a 3-3 halftime tie. The game was played in frigid, blustery conditions with wind chill temperatures in the 20s.

Hopkins got out to a 2-0 lead on a free position goal by Kadie Stamper five minutes into the game followed seven minutes later by an unassisted goal by Mary Key, her first of four goals on the day. Less than a minute later, GW's Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) scored on an unassisted goal to put the Colonials on the scoreboard. GW's scored two more goals by freshman Meghan Cratty (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and senior Colleen Schmidt (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) to put GW up, 3-2, with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

JHU's Key scored on a free position shot at the 8:02 mark to even the score at 3-3 where it remained tied into the break.

Hopkins scored the first five goals of the second half and appeared to be running away with an 8-3 margin but GW responded with three goals to close to within 8-6 on an unassisted goal by freshman Katherine Sampson (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) at the 11:35 mark.

JHU's Sarah Walsh scored her third goal at the 6:28 mark and assisted on a goal by Key with 1:41 left to keep GW at arm's length and coast to the victory.

GW sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD/Friends School) made 17 tough saves while facing 36 shots. JHU senior goalkeeper Lauren Riddick made 12 saves on 22 GW shots for the Blue Jays.

GW will try for its first victory of the season Saturday, Mar. 4 when they play Towson in a 3:30 pm game at Towson, MD.
