WILLIAMSBURG, VA - The George Washington women's lacrosse team lost a 13-9 decision to the College of William & Mary Sunday at Williamsburg, VA. The Colonials fell to 0-3 on the season while William & Mary inroved to 2-0.

GW took an early 3-1 lead on a pair of goals by Meghan McDonough ( ) and one by sophomore Lauren Bower (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) but the Tribe responded with four unanswered goals for a 5-3 advantage at the 8:13 mark. The Colonials surged back to tie the score at five, as Katie Kearns and Jamie Lee each recorded unassisted scores. GW finished the scoring in the half when junior Jamie Lee (Berkeley, CA/Berkeley) deposited a free position shot with just five ticks remaining to send the two teams to the intermission with the Tribe holding a tenuous 7-6 lead.

The Tribe's defense was simply suffocating over the final 30 minutes of play, allowing the Colonials just eight second half shots. Down 9-6 in the second half, GW pieced together several good scoring opportunities until Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) broke through for a goal at 16:36, making it a two-goal game at 9-7. GW trimmed the lead to 10-8 with 12:02 remaining, but the College's possession attack proved to be too much to overcome, as W&M ran much of the remaining time off the clock in the GW offensive zone, scoring the final game's final three goals in the process.

W&M used its athletic lineup to record 33 ground balls (to GW's 23) and cause 10 turnovers on the contest. GW freshman goalkeeper Emily Fortunato (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) saved 10 shots on the afternoon.

GW returns home for a Mar. 12 game against Davidson beginning at 3:30 pm at Mount Vernon Field.
