Final Stats

FAIRFAX, VA - In a game that witnessed seven lead changes, George Washington University (1-3) rallied to score three times late in the second half to tie George Mason University (2-1) 9-9, but ultimately fell 11-9 Wednesday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.

Trailing 9-6 with less than 18 minutes remaining in the second half, junior Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD / River Hill) scored twice unassisted and freshman Katherine Sampson (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) scored once unassisted to even the game, 9-9.

But junior Melissa Venturi's fourth goal of the game, off a free position shot, at the 4:59 mark and sophomore Alex Velesz insurance score with 1:36 left on clock carried the Patriots to victory.

Mason's defense was able to hold Hostetler, who scored a season-high four goals, and the rest of the Colonial attack scoreless for the final 7:50 of the game.

Junior Katie Linnertz led the Patriots with three caused turnovers, while senior Michele Brady caused one turnover and scooped up two ground balls. The Patriots' defensive unit caused a total of eight turnovers in the game.

Colonials' sophomore goalie Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD/Friends School of Baltimore) recorded 14 saves in the defeat.

Mason's freshman goaltender Roxie Alsruhe stopped nine shots in the win.

GW travels to Wellington, FL, to compete in the Spring Fling Festival next week. The Colonials will meet American on Monday, March 13 at 7:00 pm, and then play Colgate on Thursday, March 16 at 9:30 pm.
