Seidman's Five Goals Propel GW Lacrosse to 11-7 Win Over Villanova
Colonials Match Best Start in Program History at 5-2
March 14, 2012
WASHINGTON - Senior Megan Seidman scored a season-high five goals to lead the George Washington women's lacrosse team to an 11-7 victory over Villanova on Wednesday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field.
The Colonials improve to 5-2 on the season, matching the 2003 and 2005 squads for the best start through seven games in program history.
Seidman and freshman Allie Rash teamed up twice in the opening minutes to give GW a 2-0 lead at the 23:38 mark, but the Wildcats (1-4) responded with a pair of goals in a 50-second span to knot the game at 2-2.
Neither team found the back of the net again for more than 13 minutes before freshman Addi Bolin and senior Sarah Phillips regained a 4-2 lead for the Colonials with back-to-back unassisted goals just 34 seconds apart.
After Villanova attack Jackie Froccaro pulled the Wildcats within one with five minutes remaining in the first half, Bolin found senior Casey Disharoon with 27 seconds to go to give GW a two-goal advantage, but VU midfielder Justine Donodeo found the back of the net as time expired for the 5-4 halftime score.
The first 9:32 of the second stanza saw nine shots and three turnovers, but neither team found the back of the net until the 20:28 mark, when Donodeo tied it up at 5-5. GW's Bolin responded just 88 seconds later, converting a feed from Phillips to give the Colonials the lead for good and sparking a 3-0 GW run.
The Wildcats battled back with two goals in less than a minute to pull within one at 8-7 with 8:54 to go, but Seidman put an end to their rally with a pair of tallies over the next two minutes to give the Colonials a 10-7 lead, and junior Nicole Lacey added an insurance goal with 33 seconds left.
Seidman needed just five shots to score her five goals. Bolin finished with four points on two goals and two assists, while Phillips added three points on a goal and two helpers. Freshman Jenn Seitz led the Colonials with six ground balls.
Donodeo posted a hat trick to lead Villanova, while Froccaro and attack Maria Bowman also scored twice for the Wildcats.
Junior goalie Jess Hicks recorded eight saves for GW, while Villanova keeper Dani Weidmeier stopped 10 shots.
The Colonials return to action on Monday, March 19, when they host Mount St. Mary's at 4 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field.
