Women's Lacrosse Falls to Mount Saint Mary's 12-9
Mayer Scores Four Goals, Adds Two Assists in Loss
March 29, 2003
EMMITSBURG, MD - George Washington led 7-6 at halftime of Mount Saint Mary's, but five unanswered scores in the second half by the Mount proved too much for the Colonials to overcome, as the team suffered only their third loss of the season, 12-9.
GW (5-3, 1-1) and MSM (3-6, 0-1 NEC) traded scores throughout the first half, with Heidi Mayer scoring all four of her goals in the first half. Mayer gave the Colonials a 7-6 edge before the break scoring a goal with just 16 seconds left in the first half.
However, GW's prolific scoring in the first half, would disappear in the second half as the Mount scored five-straight goals over a ten minute period to take a 11-8 lead. The Colonials would break the streak when Megan Baldwin broke through with her fourth goal of the season at the 5:48 mark.
MSM would hold GW scoreless in the closing minutes of the match, adding a late score for the final 12-9 tally.
In addition to Mayer's strong performance, freshman Lauren Bower, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, continued her excellent play, scoring three goals and recording one assist on the match.
The Colonials return to action on Friday, April 4, when GW travel to MIT to face California in an 8:00 p.m. match.
