Women's Lacrosse Falls To California, 10-5

WASHINGTON, DC (March 30, 2002) - The Colonials were unable to come back from a second-half charge by the University of California Golden Bears who outscored George Washington 5-1 after the break to hand the Colonials a 10-5 loss.

The Colonials (3-5, 0-2) and Golden Bears battled back and forth in the first half, with Cal taking an early 2-0 lead in the first three minutes behind goals by Laura Kado and Sarah Wheatley.

GW answered back, scoring two-straight goals to tie the game, 2-2.Junior Jacqueline Arfaa (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll HS) beat Cal's goalkeeper with a running shot at 26:26. Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week freshman Heidi Mayer (Havertown, PA/Haverford HS) scored her first of two goals on the day, at beating the Golden Bears defense and netting her 13th score of the year.

Cal regained the lead with a score from Molly Brady off a pass from Kelley Queisser with 17:07 left in the half, but GW would immediately strike back less than a minute later when Mayer scored her second of the day after freshman Jamie Lee (Berkeley, CA/Berkeley HS) broke into the open field and delivered a beautiful pass to Mayer in front of the goal.

The Golden Bears lit up the scoreboard yet again with two quick goals, less than a minute apart when Queiss er scored an unassisted goal, and Cal's leading scorer Emily Edwards made her presence known with her first of three goals on the day giving Cal a 5-3 edge.

The Colonials would add a late score in the final minute of the first half to pull within one goal at the break. Freshman Meghan McDonough (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis HS) scored with 51 second left in the half beating her defender to net her ninth goal of the season.

After battling to a stalemate for the first twelve minutes of the second half, the Golden Bears broke the game wide open with five-straight scores in 10 minutes to take a 10-4 edge with 8:58 left in regulation.

 

 

GW's McDonough added a late goal in the 58th minute, and the Colonials would fall 10-5 to the Golden Bears. Freshman goalkeeper Casey Atkins (Concord, MA/Concord Carlisle HS) had a strong outing despite the result, recording a career-high 17 saves on 29 shots by Cal.

GW returns to action when travel to face Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's on Friday, April 5, in a 4:00 p.m. game.
