WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington women's lacrosse team used a balanced attack with eight different Colonials recording goals but it wasn't enough as GW fell, 16-14, to 9th-ranked Richmond in a physical game Sunday afternoon at GW's Mount Vernon Field. In the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams, Richmond's Ashley Friend led all players with five goals on the afternoon while GW's Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD) paced the Colonials with four goals. The victory improved Richmond's record to 9-2, 1-0 in the A-10 while GW dropped to 4-7, 0-1 A-10.
The Colonials drew first blood with a goal by senior co-captain Annie Howley (Levittown, NY) less than two minutes into the game before Richmond answered almost immediately with a pair of goals by Friend within a three-minute span. Hostetler scored her first goal of the day with an unassisted shot to knot the game at 2-2 at the 23:52 mark.
Richmond then struck for three straight goals from three different Spiders, Samantha Tracht, Mandy Friend and Morgan Vahue, to give the visitors at 5-2 bulge at the 18:25 mark. Less than two minutes later, Hostetler took a pass from Howley and whipped it into the net followed by a goal from Howley to bring GW to within 5-4 midway through the first period. Another goal by Vahue preceeded a pair of GW goals from Hayley McDonough (Annapolis, MD) and Hostetler to tie the game for the second time at 6-6. Richmond's Caroline McGuire answered on a free position shot for a goal and an unassisted goal to give Richmond an 8-6 advantage at halftime.

GW sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD/Friends School) went the distance and made 10 saves after facing 32 Spider shots. UR goalie Jackie Swansburg recorded 10 saves while facing 34 GW shots.
GW aims to even it's A-10 record when it travels to Philadelphia for a game at Saint Joseph's this Friday, April 7 at 4:00 p.m.
