ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - George Washington women's lacrosse got three goals from junior Katherine Sampson and three points from senior Laura Wunk, but St. Bonaventure took a four-goal lead late in the second half and held on to hand the Colonials their third consecutive Atlantic 10 loss by two goals-or-less, 11-9, at McGraw-Jennings Field Sunday.
GW (3-9, 1-3 A-10) has lost seven games by three goals-or-less this season, including one- or two-goal losses in each of its last three games. St. Bonaventure picked up its first conference win of the season and is now 2-8 overall, 1-3 in the Atlantic 10.
After falling behind 1-0, sophomore Mia Breheny and senior Kristin Karcsh each scored to give GW its only lead of the game, 2-1, with 26:29 left in the first half. St. Bonaventure went on a 5-1 run to regain a 6-3 edge, but Sampson netted two of her three goals to bring GW within 7-5 at halftime.
Karcsh, who scored a goal for the 10th consecutive game, opened the second half with her second goal to pull the Colonials within 7-6, but the Bonnies answered three minutes later. Wunk once again cut the deficit to a goal with 18:31 remaining, but SBU tallied three unanswered goals in a span of eight minutes for its largest lead of the game, 11-7, at the 9:12 mark.
Junior Katie Lilly, who won a game-high five ground balls, scored her second goal of the season with 6:15 to play and Sampson completed her hat trick with 4:34 left, but GW couldn't inch any closer.
Breheny added a goal and an assist to match Karcsh's two points. Sophomore Taylor Donohue assisted GW's last two goals to finish with two points.
