Honeyford Leads Women's Lacrosse to A-10 Win at UMass

April 8, 2007

Final Stats

AMHERST, MA - Junior Katelyn Honeyford set career-highs in goals, ground balls and caused turnovers as the George Washington women's lacrosse team overcame a three-goal first-half deficit to down Massachusetts, 10-7, on the road on Sunday.

Honeyford tallied a career-best four goals, including two during GW's second-half rally, and added eight ground balls and seven caused turnovers, both totals that are one off the program's single-game records.

GW (5-5, 1-1 A-10) fell behind 4-1 and 5-2 in the first half, but held the Minutewomen to one goal in the second half and tallied four unanswered goals during the period to pick up its first league win of the season.

UMass (5-7, 0-2 A-10) scored two goals in the opening three minutes and added two more before 10 minutes had passed to take control early. However, the Colonials controlled the final 43 minutes of play, outscoring the Minutewomen 9-3 over that span to avenge last year's season-ending 11-10 loss at Mount Vernon Field.

Honeyford had two first-half goals and junior Laura Wunk had a goal and an assist as GW trailed 6-5 at the intermission. Sophomore Meghan Cratty tallied her second goal of the game to open the second half and knot the game at 6-6, but Holly Drown put UMass back on top with 21:27 left to play.

Honeyford started the rally with an unassisted tally at the 17:41 mark to pull even at 7-7. Junior Hayley McDonough scored unassisted less than a minute later to give the Colonials their first lead of the game at 8-7. The teams traded possessions for more than 10 minutes until senior Kristina Harvey found Honeyford for her fourth goal of the game to open a two-goal cushion. Rookie Taylor Donohue capped the win with a last-second goal from Cratty, who finished with three points and three draw controls.

Harvey and Wunk each finished with two points, while juniors Kristin Karcsh (one goal) and Lindsay Melvin (one assist) had one point apiece. Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman made 10 saves to pick up her 19th career victory.

GW visits Philadelphia next weekend for a pair of conference clashes. The Colonials face La Salle on Friday at 7:00 pm and Temple on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
