GW Lacrosse Edged by La Salle, 8-7, in Overtime
Colonials Welcome Saint Joseph's for Senior Day on Sunday at 1 p.m.
April 25, 2014
WASHINGTON – The George Washington lacrosse team dropped a narrow 8-7 overtime decision to Atlantic 10 foe La Salle on Friday evening at the rain-soaked GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
GW (6-9, 2-4 A-10) and La Salle (10-5, 4-2 A-10) were knotted at 7-7 with 1:04 to play when the game was halted due to lightning in the area. The squads finished out the half, and 30 seconds into overtime – the first of the season for the Colonials – they were interrupted by lightning once again. The Explorers broke the tie at the 1:07 mark of the extra period and the Buff and Blue could not find an answer as they were edged by the visitors.
Freshman Michaela Lynch, sophomore Olivia Boudreau and senior Terasa Vassallo each scored two goals for GW, while junior Allie Rash chipped in a goal and an assist and classmate Jamie Bumgardner dished out an assist. Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Jones made a career-high 12 saves between the posts for the Colonials.
Rash struck first with an unassisted goal just two minutes into action, but La Salle answered with consecutive goals over the next 1:01 to take a 2-1 lead. Lynch fount the back of the net 3:22 later to tie the score and Rash immediately found an open Vassallo to give the Colonials a 3-2 lead.
GW and La Salle traded goals over the final 19:02 of the half, with Boudreau scoring twice on a free position goal and an unassisted tally. The Colonials carried a 5-4 lead into the halftime break.
The Explorers scored 2:54 into the second period for the fourth tie of the game, then recorded two more scores to take a 7-5 lead at 16:38. Vassallo found her way around Explorers’ goalkeeper Gabby Antonelli off of a pass from Bumgardner at 23:48 to pull GW within one, and Lynch tied things up with an unassisted goal with 5:22 remaining on the clock.
Neither team could break the draw as they entered overtime, but La Salle scored the final goal of the contest with 4:53 to play and the Colonials could not respond.
GW wraps the regular season on Sunday, April 27 when it welcomes Saint Joseph’s for a 1 p.m. game. The Colonials will honor Jordy Bathras, Lindsey DiAntonio, Madison Pohle and Terasa Vassallo in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the first draw.
