WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington lacrosse team did everything it had to do until late in the game Sunday when it lost the lead to visiting Massachusetts en route to a 11-10 loss in what became GW's final game of the season at Mount Vernon Field. With a victory, GW had an outside shot at playing in next week's A-10 championship but the loss cost the Colonials the chance to play in the A-10 Tournament to be held on their home field next Friday and Sunday.
As they've done most of the season, GW got out to a quick start and took a 3-0 lead in the game's first five minutes on goals by Hayley McDonough (Annapolis, MD), Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD) and Lauren Bower (Moorestown, NJ). UMass responded with a pair of goals, one each by Kathleen Typadis and a backhanded shot by Kerri Connerty to make the score 3-2.
GW responded with two more goals from Laura Wunk (Ellicott City, MD) and Hostetler to take a 5-2 lead at halftime. UMass opened the second half with a goal by Kaytlin McCormick less than a minute in before GW senior Colleen Schmidt (Wantagh, NY) answered with an unassisted goal to increase GW's lead to 6-3. Typadis, Howley and Hostetler each added a goal to put GW up, 8-4, at the 22:57 mark. UMass began it's comeback on a pair of unassisted goals by McCormick and Typadis to cut the lead to 8-6 with 20 minutes remaining.
Howley then came around from behind the UMass goal and wrapped a shot into the net to push GW's advantage to 9-6. McCormick scored two more goals in less than a minute and gave the Minutewomen newfound momentum. UMass's Jeanette Villapiano scored to tie the game at 9-9 at the 14:42 mark before another Howley goal lifted GW to a 10-9 lead.

GW goalkeeper Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD) had a spectacular game recording eight saves, many at point-blank range. Her counterparts, Lauren McCarthy and Krissy Anderson were equally adept in the UMass goal combining for 11 saves on the afternoon. GW outshot UMass, 33-26.
GW plays host to the 2006 Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Championship with semifinal games beginning at 1:00 p.m. Friday and the championship final at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Mount Vernon Lacrosse Field (2100 Foxhall Road, NW).
