Women's Lacrosse Falls to Richmond in A-10 Title Game, 15-7

May 6, 2007

Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington women's lacrosse team rallied to within three goals late in the second half, but Richmond proved too strong and handed the Colonials a 15-7 defeat in the A-10 Championship Final on Sunday.

GW rookie Taylor Donohue scored a team-high four points on three goals and an assist to earn All-Championship Team accolades. Juniors Kristin Karcsh and Katelyn Honeyford also were named to the All-Championship Team.

Donohue netted the games' opening goal on an assist from Karcsh, but the Spiders controlled play for most of the first period. Junior Lindsay Melvin tied the game at 2-2 with 14:53 left in the first stanza, but Richmond rolled off a 5-1 run to close the half and assume a 7-3 edge at halftime.

Richmond (14-5) extended its run to 7-1 and lead to 9-3 before the Colonials started to rally. Karcsh, Donohue and junior Laura Wunk tallied three consecutive goals in a span of 9:03, with Wunk's coming at the 12:29 mark, to slice the Spiders' lead to 9-6.

The three-time defending tournament champions took over from there, bookending 3-0 runs around a Karcsh-to-Donohue goal for the 15-7 margin.

GW had a difficult time containing the Richmond duo of Mandy Friend and Allison Furstenburg, who combined for 13 points on the afternoon. Friend, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Championship, matched the league tournament-record with six goals, while Furstenburg registered a hat trick and four assists.

Karcsh finished with three points on a goal and two assists to move past Jenny Heisler for third place on GW's career points list with 123. Karcsh, who tallied at least one point in all 18 games, closed the season with 67 points on 45 goals and 22 assists and needs 10 points to surpass Heidi Mayer for second place in program history. Katelyn Honeyford and junior Lindsay Melvin rounded out the goal scoring with one apiece.

Melvin won a team-high three draw controls, while sophomore Katie Lilly picked up a team-high three ground balls.

Senior Molly Gannon caused one turnover in her program-record 69th career game and finishes her four-year career ranked second all-time with 85 caused turnovers, tied for second with 78 draw controls and third with 111 ground balls. Classmate Kim Andreola made her 61st career start, which ranks fourth all-time at GW, and caused a team-high two turnovers.

GW trailed in shots (35-21), ground balls (17-14) and draw controls (15-9). Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman totaled seven saves to finish with 135 on the season.

GW ends its season at 11-7 after splitting its first regular-season A-10 title with Richmond and advancing to the sixth-year program's second A-10 Championship and first league title game.
