Lacrosse Looks to Continue Hot Start at Monmouth
Colonials take on Hawks at 3pm on Saturday
OPENING DRAW: The George Washington lacrosse team will put its recent success to the test as it heads out on the road to face Monmouth on Saturday at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials continued their successful start to the 2018 season by downing Longwood, 16-8, on Saturday afternoon in their home opener at the GW Lacrosse Field at the Mount Vernon Campus. After building a 10-3 lead to close the first half, GW never relinquished its advantage and held the Lancers to only 17 shots on goal to finish the day victorious. With the win, the Colonials posted back-to-back victories to start a season for the first time in program history.
STRIKING FIRST: In GW’s two opening games of 2018, the squad found the back of the net in the first two minutes of play. In their season opener against ECU, Brooke Sands put the Colonials on the board at the 28:21 mark with a goal off of the free position shot. On Saturday, the senior co-captain duo of Jocelyn Donohue and Sands put GW in the scoring column when Sands found Donohue with only 1:44 into the game. Through their first two contests, the Colonials have outshot their opponents in the first half by a combined 38-22 margin. That's helped them head into halftime with seven and six goal leads, respectively.
HERE TO ASSIST: Through two games, eight Colonials have found their teammates on the offensive end to tally an assist. Sands leads the pack with seven assists after recording a career-high six helpers against Longwood. Freshman Ioanna Mantzouratos sits behind the captain with four, sophomores Caitlin Concannon, Christine Weber, and Aidan Cage each have a pair, and Donohue, along with sophomores Katie Quinn and Caroline Kiernan, have one apiece.
RAISING HIGH: Besides Sands, three other Colonials had career-high days in GW’s home opener. After surpassing her career-high in the scoring column during the season opener, senior Camaryn Kerns once again raised the bar and scored a career-high three goals against Longwood. Quinn also surpassed her career-high with a hat trick, while fellow-sophomore Cage set her own personal best with a pair of goals.
LAST WE MET: In one of their many close battles of the 2017 season, the Colonials dropped their season opener, 16-15, to Monmouth last February. Donohue scored four goals to pace the Colonials while Adele Wise recorded nine saves in the crease. The two teams traded goals for the majority of the game, but the Hawks pressed GW in the circle, scoring with four seconds left on the clock to take the victory.
