GW's Match Versus Longwood Rescheduled for Wednesday

April 5, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington (7-2, 2-0 Atlantic 10) will attempt to tie the school record for victories when it hosts a make-up game against Longwood (7-1) on Wednesday, April 6 at 3:30. The game was orginally scheduled for March 8, but was moved due to unplayable field conditions.

The Colonials have seven victores in their first nine games this season, one short of the team record of eight triumphs set by the squad last year when it posted an overall record of 8-9.

The Colonials have won their last three contests and are receiving votes in the most recent Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) poll. It is the second time in program history the Colonials have been receiving votes in the weekly rankings. They were also recognized earlier this season, following their season-opening victory against William & Mary on March 1.

Sophomore Laura Hostetler became the fourth Colonial to notch 100 career points with six goals in GW's, 9-7, win against Denver on April 3. Hostetler leads the A-10 in points per game (4.44) and ranks second in the league in goals per outing (3.44). Senior Jenny Heisler, who joined Hostetler as a member of the 100 career-point club with an assist against the Pioneers is tied for fourth in the A-10 in ground balls per game at 3.0.

Longwood, a former Division II power is in its second year of its transition to Division I, which includes meeting the scheduling requirements of a Division I institution. The Lancers are 7-1 playing a completely Division I schedule this season, including an upset of then-No. 20 William & Mary on March 29. The Lancers only loss of the season came on March 5, 16-6, against A-10 foe St. Bonaventure, which GW will host on Friday.

The Lancers are averaging 12.62 goals per game and are led by Isa Cohen, who has 25 goals and a total of 31 points. Jen Shipp is the club's top assist woman with 11.

The match figures to be a low-scoring affair by lacrosse standards. The Colonials are second in the A-10 with a 7.77 team goals-against average. Sophomore goaltender Emily Fortunato is second in the conference with a 8.36 GAA and she owns a record of 4-1. Longwood is allowing 8.62 goals per game and Emily Wilson has played over 420 minutes in goal for the Lancers. She has an 8.92 goals-against average and a .479 save percentage.

The Colonials defeated Longwood, 12-8, last season in the only other meeting between the two teams.
