Colonials Host Raiders on Sunday

April 16, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW women's lacrosse team (10-3, 4-1 Atlantic 10) looks to make it two wins in a row when it hosts Colgate (10-4, 5-0 Patriot League) at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 17 at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.

The Colonials got back on the winning track after losing to Duquesne in overtime with a 17-5 thumping of Saint Joseph's on April 15 to improve to 4-1 in A-10 play. It is their best-ever start through five league games. GW's 17 goals scored against the Hawks was the most ever by the Colonials in an A-10 contest and its five goals allowed was the fewest allowed in a conference game in team history.

Sophomore Laura Hostetler equaled her own single-game points record with 10 in the match (6g, 4a). She already has 60 points on the year, two away from tying the team single-season record she established in 2004. She also has 17 assists this season, matching the GW single-season standard.

Reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Caitlin Garman picked up her seventh win of the year on Friday. She is one victory away from tying that single-season mark. Her 6.26 goals-against average is the best in the conference.

Colgate will be playing its second game in as many days. The Raiders remained unbeaten in the Patriot League with a 13-8 win over American on April 16. They have won five of their last six games since losing consecutive matches (to California and Stanford) on March 16 and 17.

The Raiders boast the top two scorers in the Patriot League. Katie McVeigh and Kelly Winning each have notched 51 points this season. McVeigh leads the club with 43 goals and Winning leads the team with 15 assists. Sue Bielamowicz has been rock solid in goal, making 111 saves and recording all 10 of the Raiders' victories. She has been selected as the league's Defensive Player of the Week twice in 2005.

The two teams have met just once in GW's brief history. The Raiders knocked off the Colonials, 14-4, in the seventh game in program history on March 24, 2002.
