RICHMOND, VA - Senior captain Erin Berry was chosen as the 2005 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year in a vote by the league coaches on May 5. In the same vote, the coaches tabbed first-year GW mentor Chrissy Lombard A-10 Coach of the Year and sophomore Laura Hostetler an all-conference selection for the second straight season. The awards were presented at the league's annual end-of-the-year banquet at the Marriott West Hotel.
Berry, a 2005 team captain, set a new GW single-season record with 45 ground balls and was recently named the team's Most Valuable Player. She is the only player to start every game in team history and is the Colonials' career leader in ground balls (177) and caused turnovers (123). She has a goal and an assist in 2005 and ranks second on the team with 24 caused turnovers. Berry was also selected to the all-conference team.
Lombard became the second coach in team history last summer after serving as an assistant coach for three years. She guided GW to its first winning season and best conference finish (5-2/t2nd) in her first year. The 2005 Colonials set new team records for goals scored (195), assists (95), and points (289). They also received votes in the IWLCA poll for the first time earlier this season, and Lombard is a nominee for National Coach of the Year.
Hostetler, in just her second season, is already the Colonials' career goals (99) and points leader (139). She ranks second in the conference in goals (54) and leads the league in points (77), both GW single-season records. The niece of former NFL quarterback Jeff Hostetler, she is currently fifth in the nation in points per game (4.53) and 12th in goals per outing (3.18).
Berry and Lombard became the second and third Colonials to win league end-
of-the-year major awards, joining Hostetler, who won the A-10 Rookie of the Year Award in 2004.
