Lacrosse's Laura Hostetler Named A-10 Rookie of the Year
May 7, 2004 WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington freshman Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year for women's lacrosse, the league office announced Thursday. Hostetler joined teammate Erin Berry (South Berwick, ME/Marshwood) on the All-Conference team and junior Jenny Heisler (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) was voted to the Academic All-Conference team. Hostetler earned an A-10 record six Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week awards and established four school records in her first collegiate season. She twice set a single-game record for goals with six against Howard University on Mar. 26 and broke that mark with seven against Mount St. Mary's on April 25. She also holds the single-season records for goals (45), points (62) and shares the assists record of 17 with Heisler. Hostetler appeared in all 17 games and scored goals in all but two. Berry, a co-captain, is the team's top defensive player and led the team in both ground balls with 38 and caused turnovers with 33. Berry started all 17 games in 2004 and holds four team records: single-season grounds balls (39), career ground balls (77), single-season caused turnovers (37) and career caused turnovers (70). Heisler, a two-year co-captain, maintained a 3.60 GPA in economics. A starter in all 17 games, she was voted the team's MVP for the 2004 season by her teammates. She shares the single-season record of 17 assists and was second on the team in points with 37 and fourth in the team in goals with 20. Her 64 career draw controls also is a team record.
GW completed its third season as a varsity program with a final record of 8-9. The Colonials placed fifth in the eight-team Atlantic 10 Conference with a 3-4 mark.
