Guilbert, Shah, Garman Named Academic All-District
May 24, 2007
WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington senior gymnast Jess Guilbert has been named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District II First Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Senior women's rower Mansi Shah and junior women's lacrosse goalkeeper Caitlin Garman were voted to the second team.
Guilbert now joins 82 other first-team selections from eight districts on the national Academic All-America ballot. A team tri-captain, Guilbert led the Colonials to a fifth-place finish at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships, their best conference showing in three years in the league. The recipient of GW's Senior Female Athlete Academic Award, Guilbert was a second team All-EAGL selection in the floor exercise and qualified to compete at the NCAA Southeast Regional after posting one of the highest Regional Qualifying Scores in the nation. In the classroom, Guilbert appeared on the EAGL All-Academic Team all three years and posted a near-perfect GPA while majoring in exercise science.
Shah, also a team captain, coxed the Colonials to victory in recapturing of the Class of 1998 Cup, the annual head-to-head battle with cross-town rival Georgetown, last April. The biology major also directed the Varsity Eight to a gold medal at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship. Shah was twice named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference team, appeared on the league's Commissioner's Honor Roll multiple times and was selected a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete in consecutive seasons.
Garman, a communications major, started all but one game in goal for the GW women's lacrosse team this spring, finishing second in the A-10 with a 7.84 goals-against-average in seven conference games. A two-time Academic All-Conference selection, Garman posted an 11-7 record and 135 saves and was second on the team with 36 ground balls.
The district selections are part of the Academic All-America At-Large program, which recognizes student-athletes who participate in any of 25 selected NCAA sports.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. CoSIDA District II is comprised of Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
