Three Colonials Named to IWLCA Honor Roll
July 1, 2005
SYRACUSE, NY - Former GW women's lacrosse student-athletes Heidi Mayer and Nicole Cozzolino, along with senior Lauren Bower were selected to the 2005 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) Honor Roll, which was released on June 24. In addition to its individual honors, GW earned IWLCA Academic Squad status with a 3.21 team GPA during the spring semester.
The Colonials were one of 31 teams to receive Academic Squad status from the IWLCA. Mayer, Cozzolino, and Bower were three of 152 Division I women's lacrosse players to be named to the group's national honor roll. To be eligible for Academic Squad status, a team must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, and to eligible for the honor roll, individuals must own a 3.2 GPA or higher and achieved at least junior standing at their respective institutions.
Mayer graduated in May with a degree in financial and mathematical economics. She ranks second at GW in career points with 133 and shares the Colonials' single-game assists record (5 vs. Richmond on April 1, 2005). It's the second consecutive year she has been named to the IWLCA Honor Roll.
It's also the second IWLCA Honor Roll appearance for Cozzolino, who graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She finished her career with four goals and 53 caused turnovers. Her caused turnovers total is the third-most all-time at GW.
Bower missed the entire 2005 campaign recovering from injury. She is pursuing her degree in exercise science and it is the first time she has been selected to the IWLCA Honor Roll. Bower started all 17 games as a sophomore in 2004 and ranked second on the team in goals (21) and third in points with 32.
GW had its most successful season to date in 2005, finishing with an overall record of 13-5, the first winning season in school history. The Colonials also posted a 5-2 mark in conference play and advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time in team history.
