Colonials' Athletics Teams Donated Laundry Baskets of Food for Thursday's Meal
Nov. 21, 2012
WASHINGTON – The George Washington lacrosse team led an athletics department-wide community project to bring Thanksgiving to individuals who may not have the means to enjoy a full dinner this Thursday. The team held a Thanksgiving gift basket drive from Nov. 19-20 and collected 30 laundry baskets full of food which were delivered to the Foggy Bottom Food Pantry on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
"Our team recognizes the importance of giving back to both the DC and the Foggy Bottom communities so we decided to organize a basket drive for the Thanksgiving holiday," said sixth-year head coach Tara Hannaford. "This was a great opportunity for the entire GW athletics department to get involved. We really appreciate everyone who donated and we are excited to help such a great cause."
The lacrosse squad reached out to all GW athletics teams, asking for each team to donate traditional Thanksgiving items in non-perishable form. Each basket included Turkey Day staples such as stuffing, corn and cranberry sauce as well as pie crust and filling. The two-day collection yielded 30 baskets, an impressive response from the 23 varsity programs on campus.
The team's efforts align with the Athletics Department's commitment to giving back to the community. Along with individual service projects, student-athletes are encouraged to serve the community as a team. The wide-spread support of the basket drive by GW's sports teams illustrates the Athletics Department's desire to help the Washington, D.C. community.
"We can really see how much we have to be thankful for and how fortunate we are," sophomore Jacqui Stevens said. "It is really important to give back and we thought this would be the best way to help."
