Ryan Barone joined the Colonials' women's rowing program in 2007. In addition to working with the varsity boats, Barone coaches the walk-on novice athletes, and places particular focus on training, developing and mentoring the team's coxswains.

During the summers of 2008 and 2009, Barone coached the Thompson Boat Center Junior Women, and as head coach in 2009, led the team to one silver and two gold medals at the 2009 US Rowing Club National Championships. Before moving to Washington, D.C. in late 2006, Barone was affiliated with the Cleveland Rowing Foundation, where he coached high school, collegiate and adult rowing programs and camps.

From 1999 through 2001, Barone was the head coach for Anthony Wayne High School in Toledo, Ohio. He guided the women's team to consistent top quarter finishes in regional competition, which included winning the Freshman Women's 8+ at the 2001 Midwest Scholastic Championships. He also created and coached the highly successful Toledo Rowing Club Junior Women's summer program. Barone took a hiatus from rowing from 2002 to 2006 to serve on active duty as an officer in the United States Coast Guard.

Barone's rowing career began in 1990 as a coxswain for Toledo St. John's Jesuit High School. After graduating in 1993, he competed as a coxswain for the University of Cincinnati from 1993 to 1997, where he coxed the Men's Varsity 8+ to bronze medal finishes at both the 1996 and 1997 Midwest Collegiate Championships. Barone is an experienced rower as well, and has competed in several regattas in lightweight sweep and sculling events.
