Colonials Take Second in JV8
March 23, 2013
PHILADELPHIA - The George Washington women's rowing team opened its spring season on the Schuylkill River on Saturday with a quartet of races against Saint Joseph's and Penn.
The Colonials took second place in the JV8 and third-place in the Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and 3V8
Racing conditions featured winds gusting between 10-15 m.p.h. throughout the afternoon with a racing tail wind in the first 500 meters and a head wind in the last 1,000 meters.
"It's always good to get the first race under our belt," said Head Coach Eric Carcich. "We definitely saw some areas we need to work on. We have to credit both the St. Joe's and Penn programs, who were both very fast on a tough and windy day. We are looking forward to getting back to work on Monday".
In the Varsity 8, the Colonials finished in third place, navigating the 2,000-meter course in 6:54.6. Penn took first place in 6:38.0, followed by St. Joe's in 6:50.9.
GW placed second in the JV8, finishing in 7:04.4, 10 seconds ahead of third-place St. Joes The Quakers earned first place in 6:49.40.
Penn earned the sweep with victories in the Varsity 4 and 3V8. GW finished in third in both races, finishing in 8:13.70 and 7:53.3, respectively.
GW visits defending Atlantic 10 champion Rhode Island, along with Boston College and Massachusetts on Saturday in Kingston, R.I.
