Strong Opening Weekend for Women's Rowing at Murphy Cup
Colonials send two boats to Petite Finals in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA - The George Washington women's rowing team sent two boats to the petite finals in its first competition of the spring season at the 35th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
"The landscape of this regatta changed this year with the addition of Northeastern, Penn, Boston College and UMass," said head coach Eric Carcich. "It was great having a deep, multi-conference field to gain a better perspective of where we are on the national level. We entered in five events and competed well in all races."
Both the Varsity 8 and JV8 placed second in their respective morning heats to advance to clinch a spot in the afternoon Petite Finals, where the boats replicated the effort with a pair of second-place performances.
"All boats had a chance to get themselves into a tight race, which will prove invaluable when it really matters later this spring," said Carcich.
The Varsity 8 placed second out of six schools in the final, finishing in 6:36.79 which was an eight-second improvement on its heat time (6:44.72). Drexel won the final, just 1.1 seconds ahead of the Colonials. GW topped Wesleyan, Bates, Delaware and Fordham.
The JV8 also topped its heat time with a second-place showing in the petite final. GW finished in 6:42.91 to top Temple, Drexel, Bates and Delaware while finishing behind Boston College.
"It was a good start to the season for us," said Carcich. "We have big goals and we have a team willing to work until we get it right. I am excited about practice on Monday morning."
