WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington women's varsity eight rowed stroke-for-stroke with Navy Sunday before being edged by 1.1 seconds in the second-closest race of the 24th Annual George Washington Invitational Regatta/Potomac Challenge Cup on the Potomac River. Navy crossed the finish line in 6:40.2 just ahead of the Colonials (6:41.3).

The closest race of the day was between the GW men and Canada's Brock University in the petite final. The Badgers nosed out the Colonials by a bow ball crossing in 5:50.5, just two-tenths of a second ahead of GW (5:50.7).

In the grand finals, the Columbia women defeated Oxford by an open-water margin of 13 seconds and the Navy men easily defeated the Oxford men by a margin of 11 seconds.

The other petite final had the Georgetown winning over Brock by 17 seconds.

Racing conditions were nearly ideal Sunday morning with temperatures in the mid 50s with a very light crosswind.

Next up for the GW women is the Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Rowing Championships on Saturday, April 16, on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, NJ.
