Novice Women's Rowing Completes Successful Scrimmage Versus Local Rivals

Nov. 4, 2006

Washington, DC - The George Washington Novice Women's Rowing team sported the GW buff and blue for the first time at their home course on the Potomac River in a scrimmage against Virginia and Georgetown on Saturday. The "A" boat finished fourth out of eight boats, while the "B" boat finished in eighth.

The first team for GW consisting of Katie Martin, Shannon Kelley, Ellen Van Cleave, Victoria Koke, Allison Miedema, Elodie Turchie, Melissa Fortin, Gabi Partridge and Carrie Rollman completed the course in 17:29.2, just ahead of Virginia. The second team covered the course in 20:15.

Racing conditions were fair, with flat water, and a negligible current, with temperatures in the mid-40s.

GW Freshman Women's Coach Sarah Dondero is hoping this race will provide a learning experience for her young squad. "I was glad they were able to get in their first race on their home course. I think the athletes learned a lot about racing, and how much work we still have to do. We should be able to have better races next weekend in Princeton."

The Colonial freshman will wrap up their fall season next Sunday, November 12, when they compete at the Belly of the Carnegie in Princeton, NJ.
