Nov. 4, 2006
Occoquan, VA - The George Washington Women's Rowing team wrapped up their fall season on Saturday with a second place finish at the Head of the Occoquan.
The Varsity Eight of coxswain Mansi Shah, Liz Cavanaugh, Angela Costales, Jean Williamson, Kate Austin, Hilary Goldberg, Brandi Kerrigan, Liz Gordon and Ashley McCawley took second in 17:22.75 to close the gap with the United States Naval Academy.
The first Varsity Four crew of Shah, Goldberg, Cavanaugh, Jenna Feistritzer and Ashley Larrimore finished in second place in 20:01.70, just ahead of William & Mary. The second four of Williamson, Gina Fernandes, Emily Geise, Bess Austin and Erin Brandt also rowed well finishing in fourth place at 20:33.96, just ahead of fellow conference member Duquesne.
Women's Head Coach Rob McCracken was very pleased with how his crew concluded their fall season. "Our goal going into the race was for each boat to attack the race from start to finish. I think we accomplished that today. All of the GW boats rowed well and pushed themselves. It's a great way to end the fall head racing season," said McCracken. Despite the team's favorable performance, McCracken realizes that his crew still has a lot of work to do in order to continue their fall season's success in the spring. "I hope that we can apply the focus and aggressiveness that we showed today to everything that we do over the coming months. We were able to close the gap on a fast Navy crew, but we still have a lot of work we need to accomplish in order to be fast in the spring," added McCracken.
The fall racing season for the Women's Varsity team is complete. The Colonials will train throughout the winter in preparation for their spring season that kicks off on March 24, 2007 on the Potomac River against North Carolina.
