Shehab Named January Community Service Student-Athlete of the Month
Shehab volunteers with the Grassroots Project
Freshman Laila Shehab of the women’s rowing team has been named GW’s Community Service Student-Athlete of the month for January.
This past month, Shehab volunteered for the Grassroots Project, a non-profit organization that utilizes Division I student-athletes to help provide health education to DC youth. Shehab has worked with the Grassroots Project for most of her college career, and it’s left a lasting impact on her time as a GW student-athlete.
“I first discovered the Grassroots Project during the freshman day of service,” Shehab said. “I am now a Head Coach, which entails directing games, tracking progress, and keeping notes of what we can do better next time.”
For Shehab, the combination of athletics and service played an important role when selecting the Grassroots Project. Although she can’t dedicate as much time as she would like to to service, Shehab has found a consistent place she can give back to in the Grassroots Project, and the importance of service for her has grown even more.
“Service, to me, is how a society continues to progress,” Shehab said. “There will always be an excuse as to why you are too tired or if you had more time, but this is your life and at the end of it it’s not going to be all about you, it’s going to be about the people you have affected positively.
